International Day of Organ and Tissue Transplantation: how to be a donor in Argentina

Every February 27 commemorates the International Day of Organ and Tissue Transplantationa date that is linked to other celebrations during the year that have the common goal of promoting this solidarity practice.

Organ transplantation is the replacement of an organ or tissue that is diseased, non-existent or malfunctioning for health, for a healthy one. This medical practice is assigned to those patients who urgently need it to continue with their lives.

The organs that are usually transplanted are liver, heart, kidney, lung, pancreas, and intestine. The fabrics most commonly transplanted the skin, bones, hair, corneas, and heart valves.

There are certain types of cells required for transplants, such as those from the pancreas, called islets of Langerhans, and hematopoietic progenitor cells, which in most cases includes bone marrow.

According to the World Transplant Registry, 139,024 transplants were performed worldwide in 2018, but it maintains that this number covers only 10% of people who require this medical procedure to get on with their lives.

In the country, the IncucaiCentral National Single Coordinating Institute for Ablation and Implantation, is the body that promotes, coordinates and supervises any type of activity in relation to the donation of organs, tissues and cells in Argentina.
