The International Court of Justice stresses Israel’s need to ensure that it does not commit genocide. Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges Israel to abide by and implement the ruling.

[News from this newspaper]On Friday (January 26), the United Nations International Court of Justice (ICJ) has issued a ruling on the case in which Israel was accused of committing “genocide” in the Gaza Strip. In its ruling, the International Court of Justice said Israel had evidence of genocide in Gaza.
In addition, the International Court of Justice also stated that the evidence provided by South Africa was sufficient to show that genocide against Palestinians had occurred here. However, the International Court of Justice stopped short of calling for an immediate ceasefire but stressed the need for Israeli forces to ensure that genocide is not committed.
Judge Joan Donoghue, the current president of the International Court of Justice, said Palestinians in Gaza remain “extremely vulnerable” and the suffering they experience is “deeply distressing”. According to her, the rights South Africa seeks on behalf of Palestine are “reasonable”.
The ruling, read out in The Hague, Netherlands, is not the final verdict on South Africa’s genocide charges against Israel. A final ruling on this charge is expected in the next few years. However, the day’s ruling is important for efforts to ensure the protection of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki dismissed the judge’s ruling as “for humanitarian reasons.” Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the accusations of genocide against Israel were “outrageous” and said he would take all necessary measures to defend himself. Israel has an “unwavering commitment” to the international court.
On Saturday (January 27), the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted on social media that the Indonesian government is paying close attention to the International Court of Justice’s ruling on the situation in the Gaza Strip. Although the ICJ’s ruling has not yet met everyone’s expectations for an immediate ceasefire from Israel, it is still an important development for the ICJ’s implementation.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized: “Israel has the obligation to comply with and implement the ruling.”
The ICJ’s ruling is legally binding, but the court has no mechanism to enforce it. (cx)
