On Saturday October 28 at 6 p.m., the reception rooms of the Château d’Arcangues will be open to an international conference “aiming to shed light on the life and talent of the great singer Fédor Chaliapin and his links with France and the Basque Country”.
For the occasion, documents and archives from the AM Gorky Institute in Moscow as well as rare pieces from French private collections will be presented. Michel d’Arcangues, president of the Friends of Arcangues Castle association, will reveal on this occasion the secrets of the history of the castle where his grandfather hosted Fédor Chaliapin.
Artists from the Paris Opera
Fédor Chialapine is a legendary artist who in his time renewed the image of the opera singer. By moving from the poor neighborhoods of Kazan to stages around the world, he was able to develop his career, which was as brilliant in the United States as in Europe or Asia.
In order to highlight the life and work of the artist and his mark in the Basque Country – and on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth – the evening at the castle will be organized and hosted by Anna Zvereva Jarrier, president of the Kultur Alianza association.
The guest speakers are Ivan de Limur (grandson of Fédor Chialapine), Marina Arias – Vikhil and Alexandre de Miller de la Cerda. Anna Zvereva Jarrier also specifies that “the conference will be followed by a concert of lyrical music. On the stage of the castle, artists from the Paris Opera will perform with arias and songs from the repertoire of Fédor Chialapine.
She adds: “we will also have the chance to exclusively welcome a rising star, the exceptional bass Adrien Mathonat who will be accompanied by his pianist”. As for Adrien Mathonat, we can reveal that he is originally from the Basque Country and that after studying trumpet and tuba, he was “caught” by lyrical singing. In 2022 he joined the Paris Opera Academy.
