International Concerns Over Japan’s Plan to Release Radioactively Contaminated Water: IAEA Secretary-General and Neighboring Countries React

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Secretary General Rafael Grossi said on the 9th that it was “reasonable” for neighboring countries to show great interest in Japan’s plan to release radioactively contaminated water treated at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Secretary-General Grossi met with members of the Democratic Party of Korea that day and said, “It is reasonable that this issue we are facing is attracting so much attention. ” he said.

Lawmakers of the Democratic Party of Korea, who oppose Japan’s discharge of contaminated water, are criticizing the IAEA’s comprehensive report on the 4th that Japan’s plan meets international safety standards.

On the other hand, the Korean government respected the IAEA’s report and stated that the release “will not have a significant impact” on the surrounding waters as a result of the government’s own analysis.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin criticized Japan’s plan to discharge contaminated water on the 5th and warned that it would take action if the plan goes ahead.

North Korea also criticized the IAEA’s support of Japan’s plan as “unjust” and argued it displayed a double standard, citing the IAEA’s move to curb North Korea’s nuclear program.
