Since its opening in May 2022, the International City of Gastronomy and Wine of Dijon offers a immersion in local culture and Burgundian heritage through hundreds of experiences to live and taste. With this initiative, Dijon honors the values recognized by UNESCO: the “Gastronomic Meal of the French” and the “Climats of the Burgundy Vineyard”.

Double recognition by UNESCO

In 2010, the “Gastronomic Meal of the French” was included on the list of intangible heritage of humanity. UNESCO thus recognizes the millennia-old French traditions: the recipes, the meal, the art of choosing and working with the right products, the ideal wine to accompany the dishes as well as the notions of conviviality of “eating well” in the French way. Rituals celebrated recently by the film “The Passion of Dodin Bouffant” which was chosen to represent France at the next Oscar ceremony, highlighting national culinary excellence in all its splendor.

Crowned city of art and history, Dijon is also known for its wine region, listed as a UNESCO world heritage site since 2015: the Climats of the Burgundy vineyard. From Dijon to Santenay, a strip of approximately 60 km forms a mosaic of unique wines, with the most illustrious names. UNESCO recognizes the exceptional universal value of more than 1,200 plots of vines that make up the Côtes de Nuits and Beaune, a unique and living conservatory of know-how and traditions. Unesco “protection” becomes a force in the face of the threats of standardization of tastes, linked to the globalization of markets. It is also a lever of attractiveness for the development of wine tourism, for the protection and transmission of a rich local heritage.

We rush to the gastronomic village which offers food shops, immersive experiences and even a gourmet bookstore. Entrance is free, seven days a week, to cultivate, taste, train in cooking and oenology, participate in conferences, test free experiences, and other paid ones. Proof of the craze for this gourmet theme, a new master’s degree has opened in the capital of Burgundy, dedicated to wine tourism and sustainable gastronomy, created by Burgundy Business School.

To digest, nothing better than a bike trip on the Burgundy canal. From Dijon station, nothing could be easier than joining the canal and its greenway. Several stations located in the towns crossed by the canal make it easy to return to Dijon by taking your bike on the train! Not to mention that the city is connected to French territory thanks to its five TGV lines, allowing you to come by train for a weekend or more if you like.
