What is today, August 17, a church holiday
August 17 in the church calendar – Memorial Day of the seven sleeping youths: Maximilian, Iamblichus, Martinian, John, Dionysius, Exacustodian (Constantine) and Antoninus. All of them were the sons of noble parents in the city of Ephesus, they were friends from childhood and were in military service together. Once the emperor Decius arrived in Ephesus, who ordered everyone to appear in the center of the city and bow to the pagan gods. Anyone who does not do so will face a terrible death.
The youths refused and appeared before the emperor. He immediately took away their military insignia, but decided to let them go, believing that they would change their minds during their time on the campaign. However, the young men fled to the mountains, settled in a cave, and there they began to prepare for a martyr’s feat. Decius found out where the youths were and ordered to wall up the entrance to the cave.
However, the Lord sent a long sleep on the martyrs, which lasted two centuries. By that time, the persecution of Christians had ceased, and at the mountain where the entrance to the cave was located, the Christian built a stone structure. Then God woke the youths from their sleep. One of them went down to the city and paid for the goods with a coin with the image of Decius. They seized him and brought him to the emperor, believing that the lad was hiding an ancient treasure.
When the mayor, together with the bishop, heard the story of the young man, they realized that a miracle of God had happened before them. When they came to the cave and saw the living youths, as if waking up from an ordinary dream, they believed in the Lord even more strongly. In an instant, the young men fell asleep again, this time for the general resurrection.

What day is it today in Ukraine and the world
August 17 in Ukraine and the world celebrate international black cat day. Among cats at all times, it was fluffy ones with black fur that were especially distinguished. In ancient times, they suffered from unfair treatment, because black cats were often identified with magic. But they did not immediately acquire their negative reputation. For example, in ancient Egypt, the goddess Bastet was depicted precisely in the form of a black cat. She was the protector of women and the hearth.
Until the Middle Ages, black cats remained favorites. They were especially respected by navigators, who believed that the presence of a black cat on a ship means a successful voyage. But in the Middle Ages, in particular in Europe, cats with black hair began to be hated. People believed that such a cat, crossing the road, portends death, as well as the benefit of the devil himself. Therefore, black cats were mercilessly caught and destroyed.
Fortunately, over time, all signs associated with black cats gradually disappeared. Although some people continue to treat black cats with a certain amount of caution, they consider them a symbol of bad luck.
Also August 17 potato day. For residents of the United States, this holiday is a national holiday. The potato is one of the world’s most popular vegetable crops. It can be called not only cheap, but also a nutritious vegetable. For a whole month, you can eat only on different dishes from it, without feeling hunger or nutritional deficiencies. Potatoes were first eaten 7,000 years ago in Bolivia and Peru. After cultivation, potatoes quickly spread throughout the world.
Also August 17th Day of second-hand shops. Items from second-hand stores are becoming very popular due to their low cost. But buyers are often attracted not only by savings. Connoisseurs of unusual or antique things consider such outlets to be the place where you can find real treasures.
