International Association of “Memorial” Established by 15 Organizations Following Liquidation

15 organizations of the network of the human rights organization “Memorial” (recognized as a foreign agent and liquidated) have established an international association of the same name in the jurisdiction of Geneva. It will continue the activities of the liquidated “International Memorial” for the study of political repression.

According to Memorial’s Telegram channel, the organization was registered today, May 16. The board of the international structure has already been elected and consists of 11 people representing Russia, France, Italy, Ukraine, Israel, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Great Britain, and the Czech Republic.

The co-chairs of the board are Professor Andrea Gullotta (represents Italy; worked as a visiting professor in Russia), Yevgeny Zakharov, chairman of the board of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union, historian Irina Shcherbakova, one of the founders of Memorial.

“Memorial” and “International Memorial” were liquidated by the Supreme Court of Russia on the claims of the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Moscow Prosecutor’s Office in December 2022. The prosecution alleged that the organization concealed “the fact of performing the function of a foreign agent.” The employees of “Memorial” rejected these claims and said that there were no legal grounds for the liquidation of the company.
