– A pastel of the Vaudois Nicolas Party is worth three million
This is the price reached on November 9 by a landscape of Lausanne in a prestigious sale organized by Christie’s in New York. The odds have quadrupled at once!

The sale when the Party was going on.

It’s auction season everywhere. With the usual feeling that money doesn’t matter. Or more. Seven million francs for diamond bracelets that belonged to Marie-Antoinette obtained in Geneva. Forty million dollars against a Basquiat in New York (1). Nearly eighty million euros at Sotheby’s in Paris thanks to a set of eighty-one pleasantly decorative sculptures by the spouses Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne. I pass and some of the best …
However, one number tickled me more than the others. It comes from one of the sales held at Rockefeller Center in New York. A place where Christie’s had held its first “face-to-face” vacations for twenty months. The illustrious house had done things well. One hundred and twenty “hosts” only, since it seems difficult at this level to talk about potential buyers. A jazz trio to welcome them. Ladurée macaroons at the exit. Note that, as expensive as these are, it represented nothing compared to the expected sums. This jackpot did not really materialize, however. The sale of contemporary art with the public totaled 220 million for forty issues, while that of last year had brought in 340. Entrusted by a certain José Maria Cano, the Basquiat for example did not reach, despite its forty million, than the low estimate. To be honest, the seller was hoping for double that. And Peter Doig did almost as well with 39.9 million. Ah I forgot! There was of course the brand new service NFT from Beegle. This three-dimensional gadget peaked at 28.9 million.
“It is an honor to donate a work to ensure the longevity of the Memorial against AIDS”
Nicolas Party
But enough talk. Let us come to the point of the day. On November 9, Christie’s also offered a charity sale. Intended for the New York City Aids Memorial, an association in favor of AIDS, the “Unquestioning Love” included nineteen issues written by wealthy amateurs or the artists themselves. On the menu were Sam Gilliam, Jenny Holzer or the Swiss Ugo Rondinone. I’m not going to talk to you about him, but again about Nicolas Party. The Lausanne resident had offered a landscape from this year, executed especially for the occasion. About a meter high. Nothing huge. Its author was very proud. “It is an honor to donate a work to ensure the longevity of the Memorial”. It must be said that being asked here to do so is artistic and social promotion. The purpose of the business is to make money. Lots of money. In other words, the latter is only for stars.
Ten times the low estimate
Party pastel was priced between $ 300,000 and $ 500,000. A little below the asking price in ordinary times for the foal of the Hauser & Wirth gallery, whose exhibition in Lugano lasts until January 9 (www.masilugano.ch). People had to be encouraged (there were also live bidders in London and Hong Kong on screen) to bid. Well, the battle turned out to be tough! Lots of amateurs. An electric atmosphere. The table finished its ascent to $ 3,270,000. Ten times the low estimate. And all without the specialized press being moved. It is as if this huge price is in the order (or the disorder) of things.
What does this mean in plain text? The thing means that the 41-year-old from Lausanne, who beat Cindy Sherman or Christopher Wool that night, suddenly entered the tiny hyper-name club. It is worth since November 9 (at least potentially) four times more than the day before. The market has spoken. The man is decidedly appealing to the super rich. And this even if contemporary art purists, critics and museum directors, are choosy in front of his colorful and decorative creations. The same phenomenon was experienced in the past with Fernando Botero, also qualified as an illustrator. Morality, today there is not just a two-tier market. There is another separating what is museum or not. The chic and the expensive. This is also called, with a certain disdain, “the taste of others”.
(1) «The Guilt of Gold Teeth» de 1982.
Born in 1948, Etienne Dumont did studies in Geneva which were of little use to him. Latin, Greek, Law. A failed lawyer, he branched out into journalism. Most often in the cultural sections, he worked from March 1974 to May 2013 at the “Tribune de Genève”, starting by talking about cinema. Then came the fine arts and books. Other than that, as you can see, nothing to report.
