International ambitions Oxygen choreographer Jennifer Romen (24) | Entertainment

entertainment">The finale was filmed in Los Angeles just before the Covid-19 crisis paralyzed all American television productions. The public was not allowed to attend the recordings and the finalists were given much less time to prepare optimally. Romen: ,, I am proud of what we were able to achieve under great pressure, but if we had more space, I think we would have come out better. ”

entertainment">Romen started dancing at the age of twelve, inspired by Michael Jackson. She initially imitated his movement style in her bedroom, although her ambitions extended further. By participating in hip-hop competitions, she quickly became a household name in that world. She became European champion three times, three times she became world champion and as a soloist she won the World Dance Sport Games in Taiwan.

Conquer a place

entertainment">Five years ago, Romen founded the ‘urban’ dance company Oxygen. She dances with it herself and also provides the choreographies. Her ‘dance crew’ is especially praised for their great creativity and their eye-catching illusions. Success was not long delayed, with the TV show’s profit as highlights Dance as One, a golden buzzer in the French version of Got Talent and gold at the World Of Dance Championships in Los Angeles.

entertainment">“We were scouted for that world championship NBC World of Dance, although the selection that followed was still very exciting ”, says Jennifer Romen. “Dancers from all over the world try to conquer a place in that program, sometimes in vain for years on end. We immediately moved on. ”

entertainment">Leading up to the final, Oxygen made a big impression on the jury led by Jennifer Lopez, who especially praised the rigor of the performance displayed by the nine dancers of the Maastricht company. She gave the dance group a standing ovation more than once, but turned out to be slightly less enthusiastic about their final performance.

Great performers

entertainment">“It’s a shame we didn’t win, but it was a great adventure”, Romen looks back. “Moreover, we were able to show what we have to offer and as a result made all kinds of international contacts.” Her dream: “Ideally, I would choreograph their show for major artists who go on tour and make room for Oxygen.” She seems well on her way.

entertainment">Meanwhile, Jennifer Romen also has plenty to do here in the Netherlands. Since 2017 she has been running the Urban School of Dance Arts in Maastricht, a dance school specialized in ‘Urban’ dance styles. She has also worked as a choreographer for TV shows such as DanceSing in DanceDanceDance.
