The New Reform Party, co-chaired by Lee Nak-yeon and Lee Jun-seok, is showing signs of infighting just a week after its merger. The second Supreme Committee meeting scheduled for the 16th was suddenly canceled, and the war of nerves between the two co-representatives appears to be intensifying over the entry of Bae Bok-ju, former deputy leader of the Justice Party, and the appointment of the chairman of the nomination management committee.

The New Reform Party held its first high-level meeting on the 13th and criticized both the Yoon Seok-yeol government and the Democratic Party of Korea led by Lee Jae-myung, saying it would become an “alternative opposition party.” It was said that the highest meeting would be held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning, but the highest meeting was suddenly canceled on the morning of the 16th. It is known that there are differences of opinion among the four factions within the New Reform Party over the entry of former vice-chairman Bae Bok-ju, who has supported the protests of the National Coalition for the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Jeon Jang-yeon).

The existing supporters of Representative Lee Jun-seok claim that former Justice Party lawmaker Ryu Ho-jung and former vice-president Bae Bok-ju’s political inclinations are, ‘they cannot be with us.’ Meanwhile, former Vice-President Bae announced in a media interview on the 13th that Representative Nak-yeon Lee had joined the New Mirae Party and said, “As I have been active as a disabled and women’s rights activist, I am determined to become a proportional representative and create policies and laws with this identity.” As a result, the backlash from CEO Lee Jun-seok’s supporters grew even stronger.

It was reported that on the 16th, CEO Lee Jun-seok asked Representative Lee Nak-yeon to publicly send a message that former Vice-President Bae could not be welcomed. It is also reported that he made a request to acknowledge that he will be the party’s ‘plenipotentiary representative’ in the future. From Representative Lee Jun-seok’s perspective, it is interpreted as a measure to appease the opposition of his existing supporters. He has recently continued to make remarks toward members of the Justice Party, such as ‘There is no room for their thoughts to mix’ and ‘It will be difficult for them to become the mainstream in the party.’

However, it is known that representatives from the Democratic Party and the Justice Party, including Representative Lee Nak-yeon, are opposing the move, saying, “It is impossible for a political party in a liberal democratic country to oppose the admission of a specific person,” “Isn’t this a test of ideology?” and “Lee Jun-seok is being a bitch.” The two sides are continuing to engage in a war of nerves over measures such as the appointment of the chairman of the nomination management committee, party symbolism, and resolution of existing debt.

An official from the New Reform Party said, “The Third Zone has come this far with difficulty, but if it makes unnecessary noise through political engineering, it is no different from the two major parties that we have been criticizing.”

As the controversy over the infighting grew, Representative Lee Jun-seok appeared on MBC radio that evening and said, “The party conference room had to be moved from the existing National Assembly hall to the main office, so it was postponed to next Monday.” When asked whether it was because of an internal conflict, he said, “It’s not like that.” Regarding various differences of opinion within the party, he said, “In reality, there are very heated debates, and sometimes compromises are found,” and “There are many cases where they are adjusted, and there are times when they run parallel lines.”

However, CEO Lee Jun-seok announced a press conference at 10 a.m. on the 17th. Some are speculating that CEO Lee may have made an ‘important decision.’ Regarding this, he said, “I think we will discuss pending issues within the party and then inform the public about what is decided.”
