Internal Medicine Specialist from Dr. Medistra Hospital. Gunawan, Sp.PD. said that diabetics do not have restrictions regarding food, but the amount of intake must be adjusted to the body’s needs.
“So diabetics don’t have any restrictions, they can eat whatever they want, but the amount is adjusted to our body’s capacity,” said Dr. Gunawan in a seminar which was attended online, Saturday.
Dr. Gunawan said many diabetes sufferers ask whether they are still allowed to eat white rice. He said that diabetes sufferers are still allowed to eat white rice, but in portions adjusted to the body’s energy needs, especially for those who exercise regularly.
“For example, there is a person with diabetes who has just been detected, his sugar has just risen, but he still has a lot of insulin capacity, he is thin, he still exercises regularly. Well, exercise requires energy. If he doesn’t eat rice, he will immediately get tired in the middle of the road while exercising, he won’t be able to exercise again. So you can eat rice but regulate the amount,” he advised.
However, Dr. Gunawan reminded the importance of diabetes sufferers to consult with a nutritionist to determine the right amount of intake, according to the individual’s needs.
