Al Ittihad from Saudi Arabia is the great candidate to win everything in this 2023-24 season. The reigning champion of the Saudi League Pro has already won his first two league games and quickly took out a candidate’s badge to defend his title.
And of course, if in its ranks it has world-class stars like Benzema, NGolo Kanté or Fabinho, who in recent months have changed the demands of European football to play in the Middle East.
However, not everyone who made that decision is doing entirely well. This is the case of the Portuguese João Pedro Neves Filipe, better known as Jota, who at the age of 24 joined Al Ittihad in exchange for 30 million euros from Celtic of Scotland.
According to the Saudi press, specifically the newspaper ‘Al-Sharq Al-Awsat’, the sheikhs in charge of the club are looking at how to fire the Portuguese player after only a few weeks in the team.
This occurs in the midst of a kind of internal crisis in the team as a result of the transfer policy. The possible arrival of goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais from Al-Hilal ignited everything, since hiring him would mean that Brazilian goalkeeper Marcelo Grohe would have to leave the club, something that clashes with the wishes of fellow Brazilian manager Nuno Espírito Santo.
In addition, it is mentioned that there is a kind of discontent between the fans and the leaders of Al Ittihad. The reason? Well, according to the fans, the arrival of a player without a star sign like Jota. This being the case, a perfect cocktail would be formed to find the departure of the Portuguese.
It should be remembered that in the Saudi League Pro “only” eight non-Saudi players per club are allowed. Al Ittihad already has ten, with two footballers without being registered, pointing to another galactic signing before its closing of the transfer book: the Egyptian Mohamed Salah.
How long can Saudi Arabian soccer hire players?
The Saudi League Pro pass book closes next Wednesday, September 20. Thus, there are still several more weeks of signings left in their teams.
What is the format of the Saudi league?
The format of the Saudi Pro Legue is similar to that of the big leagues of the old continent. There are 18 teams, who in round-trip round-robin matches will play for 34 dates to define the great champion of the tournament.
