Intern doctor presents citizen initiative so that bureaucrats can access cancer prevention in QR

By Rafael Briceño

CHETUMAL, MX.- Given the need to implement actions that allow treating cancer in an early and timely manner, and the concern about the lack of programs of government authorities, the intern Anika Michel Juárez Sánchez presented to the XVI Legislature a proposal for a decree initiative to reform article 35 of the Law of Workers at the Service of the State Government so that a day is decreed in which employees can go to the doctor and have their tests carried out without affecting their salaries.

“It is common knowledge that in some government agencies or agencies, presenting a medical license or proof of attendance at a medical consultation has repercussions on punctuality and attendance payments, permanence at work, four-month period and other economic incentives that the worker has and that in Many of the cases, because they do not lose that income, do not attend a prevention consultation ”, he explained.

In the explanatory memorandum of the initiative, founded on the Citizen Participation Law, explained that there are many dates that are designated as measures to prevent cancer, “however, there is still more to do, hence the initiative for the legislature to decree a day off and workers can go to take a test against cancer in any governmental or private medical institution, without thinking that it can be discounted or lost incentives and rewards granted to the institution for work attendance ”.

He affirmed that more than commemoration dates, there are real actions to combat this evil, because cancer is the main cause of death worldwide, “in addition, the right to health is considered a Human Right, recognized by various countries, organizations international, and in Mexico it is established by Article 4 of the Constitution, but there is a lack of political interest to establish more and better actions to combat it ”.

Juárez Sánchez recalled that February 4 is World Cancer Day in order to create awareness and sensitize people about a disease that unfortunately affects many children and young people; on February 15, the International Day of the Child with Cancer; on October 19, the International Day to Fight Breast Cancer and awareness campaigns “but they have not been enough to reduce the incidence of cancer cases, which places the disease in the third position of causes of death in the country ”.

He explained that a factor that limits cancer detection and treatment is the difficulty in accessing health services and the technology available for timely detection and treatment “even if the disease is detected early, patients face other obstacles that prevent or delay cancer care, such as the lack of hospital infrastructure close to their communities, limited access to treatment, or lack of specialists to operate the technical team, among others ”.

Faced with this situation, there are 60% of deaths of patients with cancer, among institutions of the Health Sector, where there are important differences between the mortality rates from breast, cervical and prostate cancer; It is estimated that if this trend continues by 2025 in Mexico, cases will increase by 50%, from 147,000 to more than 220,000 new cases.
