Interesting! These are 5 shocking scientific discoveries during 2022, how is this year going?

Optika.id – Various scientific discoveries have been recorded every year. Indeed, some of them have become popular discoveries for scientists. This is no exception in 2022. Various scientific discoveries ranging from super-fast computers, giant bacteria to Black Holes closer to Earth have been crowned as the most “broken” discoveries this year.

According to Science NewsMonday (2/1/2023) Optika.id summarizes the five most popular scientific discoveries of 2022:

The oldest surgery

The first known surgical operation was the amputation of a leg. This was concluded by researchers after studying the skeleton of a person who lived on the Indonesian island of Borneo about 31,000 years ago.

The bone showing a rough cut in the lower left leg of the skeleton indicated to the researchers that the cut indicated healing. In fact, the individual managed to survive for several years after the surgery.

This discovery also broke the record where previously there were scientists who discovered the first surgery performed about 15,000 years ago.

A super computer called Frontier this year is capable of generating numbers at incredible speeds. The computer used by Oak Ridge National Laboratory has a power of approximately 1.1 trillion operations per second and is the world’s first exascale computer or computer with an operating power greater than 10 to the power of 18 per second in the world.

It is hoped that in further development, researchers will be able to create a supercomputer capable of performing 442 quadrillion operations per second. At the same time, ESA-scale computers are expected to account for breakthroughs in everything from health to climate science to particle physics.

Giant unicellular bacteria

As we know, bacteria usually live in a microscopic world that can’t be seen with the naked eye, so they need tools to see it. However, it’s a different story with a bacterium called Thiomagarita magnifica.

These bacteria can be seen with the naked eye without tools. The reason is that these bacteria average about one centimeter in length. T. Magnifica is about 50 times larger than other large species of bacteria and about 5000 times larger than common bacteria. T. magnifica is known to live in mangrove forests in the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean. Until now, it is still a mystery among scientists why this species evolved into a giant.

Another shocking discovery has come from the world of wildlife. The reason is that, some time ago off the coast of Antarctica, crocodile icefish gathered to form colonies the size of the city of Orlando, Floria and spawn in Antarctic waters.

About 60 million nests of the fish Neopagetopsis ionah, better known as the crocodile icefish, span some 240 square kilometers on the seabed. This certainly causes a sensation because this species of fish consists of only one colony containing hundreds of nests. Abundant food supplies and access to areas of warm water are thought to be responsible for the swelling of these fish colonies.

Astrophysicists discovered that the black hole is more than 1,560 light-years from Earth after sifting through data released by the Gaia spacecraft.

Dubbed Gaia BH1, it is twice as close as the closest previously known black hole.

However, even this new record may not last long. There are about 100 million black holes in the Milky Way, most of which have yet to be discovered because they are invisible.

These are the five most “disruptive” scientific discoveries among scientists. When we are only interested in social media trends every day, the life of scientists seems more colorful with extraordinary discoveries.
