Interest in the most expensive used cars has not declined much, despite the pandemic

Sales of more expensive used cars with a price of over one million crowns have not decreased in the last year, despite the coronavirus pandemic, while at some sellers they have increased by tens of percent. In contrast, sales of used cars in the most common category from 50,000 crowns to half a million decreased. It follows from the data of traders.

In the last 12 months, the AAA Auto car bazaar group has sold luxury cars in the Czech Republic with a price of over one million for a total of 330 million crowns. The vast majority of sales took place online. “There was also interest in cars in the price segment of half to one million crowns, almost 2,800 crowns were sold for 1.9 billion crowns,” added CEO Karolína Topolová.

According to Mirka Cimrová, head of the used car division Das WeltAuto of Porsche ČR, the overall decline in sales of used cars was not nearly as dramatic as for new cars. While sales of new cars fell by a fifth last year, Das WeltAuto’s network fell by only 4.7%. In the category over one million crowns, there was a decrease of only two percent. “We recorded a larger drop in sales in the million category only in the first quarter of 2021,” said Cimrová.

For cars that have so far been the most frequently sold, ie at acquisition prices from 50 to 500 thousand crowns, the decline is more pronounced. During the year-long pandemic, AAA second-hand car dealers sold almost 31,000 of them with a total value exceeding seven billion crowns, ie approximately one billion less than in the same period a year ago.

Interest in the cheapest cars with a purchase price of up to CZK 50,000 has increased. Customers usually buy such cars second to the family and use them as so-called “mobile veils”.

Among the most expensive cars sold in the AAA Auto network in the last year were, for example, the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG with 11,000 kilometers driven and the price of 4.99 million crowns, which was sold online, or the Mercedes-Benz GLE 53 AMG Coupé with 18,000 mileage. kilometers and the price of 2.7 million crowns.

According to Cebia, the number of used cars on the Czech market fell by seven percent to 707,000 used cars as a result of the closure of establishments and the uncertain economic situation last year.

According to the online car dealer Carvago, the turnover of the Czech used car market fell by 46% to 61.4 billion crowns last year. In total, used cars, dealerships of individual brands and private individuals sold 255,000 cars due to the coronavirus pandemic, ie 47% less year-on-year.
