Interest in laptops has risen by up to half

“The laptop market in the Czech Republic has de facto collapsed. In particular, schools are now preparing for distance online teaching, in addition to which they have been promised subsidies for equipping teachers with laptops, and therefore a huge excess of demand has arisen. Our company specifically supplies IT services to two secondary schools and we have been dealing with the demand for notebooks continuously since August. Distributors are now telling us flatly, we are not able to deliver laptops at all, at the earliest in a month, rather count for two, ”said Karel Diviš, director of IDC-softwarehouse.

Demand for notebooks at the largest domestic trader, Alza.cz, has been growing throughout the third quarter, and growth has accelerated even further since the beginning of September. “Information from global markets suggests that laptops may fail during the fall. Thanks to timely pre-supply, Alza now still has enough goods in stock for fully functional online teaching and work from home for households and customers from companies and educational institutions, ”said Petr Bena, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of Alza.

Lenovo, the world’s largest computer producer, currently said it has sufficient stocks. However, the company acknowledged that oversupply may occur in some specific product segments.

According to Pavla Hobíková, another large e-shop, Mall.cz, is currently doing everything it can to secure the largest possible stocks from suppliers. “However, due to the effects of the pandemic on Asian production, we can already see that some assortments and models will fail. Complications in deliveries were reported to us by most suppliers, ”she added.

“Currently, there is great interest in laptops, computers and monitors due to the deteriorating situation around the spread of the virus, and thus the increasing need to work from home. A significant part of sales is sales to education, which again faces the challenge of how to teach remotely, ”added Petr Loužecký from Algotech.

In addition to PCs and monitors, the pandemic is of great interest, especially in printers, mice and keyboards. The numbers for webcams and microphones are even higher, compared to last year, this is up to a hundredfold increase. This is related not only to frequent work from home, but also to home teaching.

Each primary school should receive CZK 20,000 for teachers by mid-October. The purchase must be completed by the end of the year. The state will release 1.2 billion crowns for the technical retrofitting of schools.
