An intercultural youth council is created in the region

The Orienthèque, in collaboration with the Carrefour jeunesse-emploi (CJE) of Pierre-De Saurel, launched the project aimed at creating an intercultural youth council on July 5th.
This initiative, made possible thanks to the financial support of the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration, aims to mobilize young people aged 14 to 25 around issues that affect them and also to promote integration. young people from immigrant backgrounds.
“Welcoming and social inclusion of newcomers is an integral part of L’Orienthèque’s mission. Through the intercultural youth council project, workers will be able to deploy strategies to support a targeted group of people with an immigrant background who experience certain difficulties in terms of learning new cultural and social codes and integrating into their host society, at a time in their lives when creating a sense of belonging and self-esteem are vital for their personal development. By allowing young immigrants to set goals and get involved in projects that interest them, in collaboration with local young people, we give them the opportunity to grow, discover themselves and fit in well,” says Marilyne Dumas, Diversity and Inclusion Director at L’Orienthèque.
The council will bring together both young people of immigrant origin and others who live in the region, adds Mario Fortin, general manager of the CJE de Pierre-De Saurel. “That is the strength of this project. It will be a place of exchange, sharing and reflection, but also of action since the participants will be called upon to take part in workshops, outings and other activities that they themselves have chosen to carry out. . »
Two speakers will accompany the intercultural youth council: Sarah Poirier and Félicien Ntakiyimana. Starting this summer, they will go out to meet the population to publicize the project, with the aim of forming the council in the fall.
The prefect of the MRC, Sylvain Dupuis, was delighted with the deployment of this initiative which, according to him, is directly related to certain objectives of the social development action plan unveiled last fall.
“The MRC de Pierre-De Saurel is committed to facilitating the social inclusion of newcomers. We therefore welcome the creation of the intercultural youth council with great enthusiasm,” he says.
