Olympiacos had the opportunities and goal in the final of the Intercontinental Cup in the legendary “Maracana” of Rio in the presence of 40,000 spectators, but the
Flamengo with a goal in stoppage time won 2-1 and won the trophy.
This was the 3rd final in the event. They were preceded by the 2022 win by Benfica against Peñarol in Montevideo (1-0) and the 2023 win by Boca Juniors against Alkmaar in Buenos Aires (1-1, 4-1 on penalties).
Just in the 5th minute, Olympiacos missed a double chance with Kostoula and Papakanello to open the scoring. Flamengo forced Botis to undergo two surgeries at 10′ and 15′, but in the 20′-22′ period, Piraeus missed three unique opportunities with Papakanellos, Pneumonidis and Kostoulas to open the scoring. In the 25th minute, Botti made a terrible save on Wallace’s volley.
In the second half, Olympiacos managed to open the scoring in the 55th minute. In a cross by Alafakis and an effort by Kostoulas, the ball reached Liatsikouras after some fights, who made it 0-1 with a cool shot.
In the 67th minute, Dama threatened with a diagonal shot and in the 73rd minute, Vinicius, after a save by Botis, equalized 1-1. In the 88th minute, Olympiacos was unlucky to win as Prekate’s header was stopped by the crossbar of Alves. And instead of making it 1-2 in the 92nd minute
Gabriel made it 2-1 from close range and gave Flamengo the trophy.
