In Aspasia’s house, you can now look into the chimney and fish out fried chickens, you can sneak into a dark chest and try several more mischiefs in the style of the characters created by the German satirist Wilhelm Busch – the two disobedient friends Max and Moritz.
The authors of the interactive exhibition for children are spouses and parents of three children – director Anta Priedīte and scenographer Aigars Ozoliņš.
“We both come from a theater background, and therefore the main thing in theater is usually action. This exhibition is a little different from most exhibitions we have seen in Latvia – in that there is a lot of action in it, that children have to do things The other thing that is important to me personally – there are quite a lot of letters in the exhibition, because I think that people become better people when they read. I would like all children in Latvia and, of course, in the world to understand how exciting reading is,” says director Anta Pine tree.
The author of the exhibition, the artist Aigars Ozoliņš, says: “The author Bush, who wrote and drew, should be treated with respect, with respect for the children who will come here and who should be seen as thinking beings who need to beat, need to move.
We have three children, we know what it means to sit the children down and have them watch in a relaxed state. Knowing all this takes into account.
We have to start reading from the beginning to the end, just like a book, we also have every problem numbered, and we have to go to the exhibition in order by number, and when we solve one, we have to take it to the town, we have to attach the found property, and then only if we do it in order, the town will light up .”
The reason why this exhibition was created in Aspazija’s house in Jūrmala is the 190th birthday of the author of the book’s text and illustrations, Vilhelm Bus, which was celebrated last year, and the fact that it was Aspazija who translated this world-famous book into Latvian in 1904.

Dace Kaukule, the representative of Aspazija’s house and the organizer of the exhibition, says: “In 1904, when Aspazija undertook this work, Jānis Poruks said that Maks and Moritsa should definitely not be translated into Latvian, because there are all kinds of tricks and tricks, Latvian children don’t need to know about it. But Max and Moritz were dear to Aspasia as a child, in her high school years it is written in her diary that she herself tried to imitate the tricks of Max and Moritz. The translation of Aspasia is highly appreciated, critics believe that Aspasia has managed to preserve the laconism of Wilhelm Busch and the humor of the texts, although it at the same time, when we now compare this German translation with Aspasia’s work, we can see many things where Aspasia went her own way.”
The museum has the 1928 edition, which is the first edition printed in the modern Latvian language, before that all “Makši and Morici” were in the old print.
Max and Moritz by Wilhelm Busch is a semi-autobiographical story. The author identifies himself with Max, and his friend, the miller’s son, with Moritz. He wrote comics more for adults, revealing the hypocritical society of the 19th century, the lack of morality and the consequences of violence. The publisher, on the other hand, saw in the manuscript with foresight a success in children’s literature.
The exhibition in Aspazija’s house will be on display until the end of April next year.
