Inter aim for top of the table after win over Lecce
Inter Milan moved up to second in the table after a 2-0 win over Lecce last weekend. A header from Matteo Darmian (5′) just after the kick-off allowed Inter to take the lead. Midway through the second half, Marcus Thuram won a penalty for the Nerazzurri.
Hakan Çalhanoğlu (70′ P.) stepped up to convert the penalty, thus giving himself the privilege of marking a personal milestone by converting 17 penalties in 17 attempts. No one in Serie A have not recorded a longer run since records became available, in 2005/06. The win allows Inter to have four points (1G, 1D, 0P), alongside five other teams, and move within two points of the Juventus (2G, 0D, 0P), who are the only Serie A team to have won two games in the first leg.
Juventus to face the Roma Next weekend, Inter could seize the opportunity to overtake the Old Lady. However, the game against Atalanta will not be a walk in the park, even if Inter have an 11-game unbeaten run against visitors (6G, 5D, 0P). Preparations have been in full swing this week, with Lautaro Martínez in training. But the 27-year-old forward will not be able to come on from the start of the game against Atalanta.
Lautaro Martinez was not selected in Inzaghi’s squad against Lecce but is expected to make an appearance on Friday. A 3-5-2 with Mehdi Taremi and Marcus Thuram in attack is expected.
Atalanta under pressure after defeat to Torino and mixed start to season
Atalanta are coming off a 2-1 defeat after throwing away a one-goal advantage against Torino last weekend at the Grande Torino. La Dea is already reaping the benefits of its €22 million signing from Genoawith the arrival of Mateo Retegui (26′), who scored his third goal in two games to give his team the lead. However, two goals from Torino, the second being an opening goal from Che Adams (50′), left the Goddesses without a point after Mario Pašalić missed the penalty in stoppage time.
Atalanta are currently in 8th place with three points heading into Matchday 3 (1G, 0D, 1P). While a defeat on Friday would see Atalanta drop further down the table, it would also leave the Goddess with two defeats in their first three Serie A games for the first time since 2017-18. Last weekend’s 3-4-2-1 formation is likely to remain in place with Mateo Retegui leading the attack. Gianluca Scamacca and Giorgio Scalvini are both sidelined with a plethora of ACL injuries.
Goalkeeper Rui Patrício and Juan Cuadrado recently joined Gasperini’s team. In addition, Teun Koopmeiners has joined Juventus.
