In the 2nd attempt after 2021
Now it’s official: Inter Milan have introduced Marcus Thuram as a new signing. The 25-year-old striker is coming from Borussia Mönchengladbach on a free transfer after the end of his contract and has signed with the Champions League finalists until 2028. With a market value of 32 million euros, he is the most valuable player to leave the Bundesliga for free this summer.
“At Inter, purely numerically, Thuram will replace Edin Dzeko, who has not renewed his contract and is moving to Fenerbahce. Since Inter can hardly spend money on transfers without sales, Thuram was ideal. Even if he rakes in a relatively high salary, it will still be possible to list him in the books with a little less effort than Dzeko. In addition, of course, he also ensures that the squad is rejuvenated,” explains Jatin Dietl, Transfermarkt Area Manager Italy.

The background are tax benefits for workers who come to Italy from abroad. The gross for these is usually much lower than for local people or people who have been working in the country for a long time. Thuram is said to earn around 6 million euros net at Inter, which corresponds to around 7.5 million gross due to the so-called Decreto Crescita. Dzeko, who joined Milan from AS Roma in 2021, had earned around €9m. Thuram is said to have gambled for a high hand money until the end. The information fluctuates between 5 million and 10 million euros – the latter figure was recently reported by “Kicker” among others.
Ex-Gladbacher Marcus Thuram at Inter Milan: transfer at the 2nd attempt
On the field, Thuram could take on the role of Dzeko at Inter or Romelu Lukakus (30), whose future after his loan from Chelsea is still unclear. A new loan offer was recently reported by “The Telegraph“. Dietl continues: “Inter wanted Thuram two years ago – shortly before his injury (torn inner ligament in August 2021; editor’s note) and then had to switch to Joaquín Correa. Coach Simone Inzaghi certainly sees him as an ideal building block for his offensive. With his physique and speed, he could do well in Serie A and form a strong duo with Lautaro Martínez.”

To the Italy forums Thuram is following in the footsteps of his father Lilian, who spent the best years of his career between 1996 and 2006 in Serie A with Parma and Juventus. Like his brother Khéphren, the new Inter professional was born in Italy. During his time in Gladbach, Thuram had often aroused the interest of larger clubs since 2019, including AC Milan, RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain this summer. While the French themselves declined, the attacker decided against the other two offers and has now signed with Inter
