Inter Milan defies Manchester City draw

At the start of the new Champions League season, Inter Milan forced a 0-0 (0-0) draw away from Manchester City. After four wins in the English league and the Super Cup title, Manchester City was thus without a win in a competitive match for the first time this season.

In the duel between the Italian and English champions, Manchester City, after a varied first half, played with more pressure after the break, but was unable to convert this into a goal.

Ilkay Gündogan was substituted on for the hosts at half-time. The former DFB captain, who ended his international career in the summer, revived Manchester City’s offensive play, but his header was saved by Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer in the 89th minute.

Paris Saint-Germain struggled against FC Girona and won 1-0 (0-0) at home. Nuno Mendes redeemed the French champions with a lucky strike in the 90th minute: his cross went through the legs of Girona’s strong goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga. The Spanish first division team has qualified for a European Cup for the first time in the club’s history this season.

Sparta Prague, VfB Stuttgart’s upcoming opponent, won 3-0 (2-0) against RB Salzburg in its first appearance in the Champions League in 19 years. Salzburg goalkeeper Janis Blaswich, who is on loan from RB Leipzig, had to reach behind him for the first time in the second minute of the game.

Celtic Glasgow beat Slovan Bratislava 5-1 (1-0). Last year’s Augsburg midfielder Arne Engels scored a penalty against Borussia Dortmund to give them a 3-0 lead (56th minute). FC Bologna and Shakhtar Donetsk drew 0-0 (0-0).
