David Beckham could soon be forced to come up with a new name for his soccer club Inter Miami. The major Italian club Inter Milan has won a legal victory in the ongoing dispute over naming rights in the US state of Florida.

From the perspective of the Milanese, “Inter” is a worldwide synonym for the 18-time Italian champions from Serie A. Inter Miami was founded by a group of investors led by long-time England international Beckham and competed in Major League Soccer for the first time last year. Miami argues that many clubs already use the suffix. Even in the USA there are clubs like Inter Nashville and Inter Atlanta, but both are amateur clubs.
The Milanese have held the rights to the “Inter” brand on the American market since 2014. In 2019, the association filed a complaint with the US patent office, and in February 2020 the office confirmed that the use of the term by Inter Miami was problematic.
