Inter Miami presented football world champion Lionel Messi (36) to the public in a festive ceremony.
A day after the American Major League Soccer (MLS) club officially announced the signing of the Argentinian soccer star for two years, Messi presented himself to the fans at DRV on Sunday evening (July 16, 2023, local time), which was sold out to 18,000 spectators PNK Stadium.
Sohn Thiago tunnelt Papa Messi
But son Thiago stole the show from his famous father Lionel Messi for a moment during his turbulent introduction as a newcomer to Inter Miami. When the Argentine soccer world champion waved and presented himself to his new fans and strolled leisurely across the lawn, he was tunnelled by his ten-year-old son.
Messi was surprised to say the least and was initially visibly irritated by where the ball had suddenly come from between his legs. When he identified rascal Thiago as a “sinner”, he smiled, went up to him and gave him high fives.

“I’m very happy that I chose this city and this project with my family,” Messi said at the event called The Unveil. “Great things will happen. I feel the same desire I’ve always felt as a competitor, to win and help Miami grow.” Messi’s debut in an Inter shirt is set to follow on July 21 when Miami win the Leagues Cup against Mexican club Cruz Azul opened.
Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham (48) made a similar move a few years ago, joining the Los Angeles Galaxy. “Ten years ago I started the journey of building a new MLS team,” said the former England international. “I said then that it was a dream to bring the best players in the world to South Florida and the great city of Miami. Players who share our goal of making football grow in this country.”
In a video message, sports greats such as football legend Tom Brady (45) and basketball player Stephen Curry (35) welcomed Messi to the United States.
MLS: Also Sergio Busquets soon at Inter Miami
The MLS club had previously introduced another new signing in Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets (35). The long-time FC Barcelona professional has received a contract with the Major League Soccer club until 2025. The Spaniard, who turned 35 on Sunday, played with the superstar from Argentina at FC Barcelona from 2008 to 2021.
Due to the weather, the event had to be postponed for two hours, Miami’s co-owner Jorge Mas took the rain and the thunderstorm with humor: “Tonight we’ll do it Miami-style in the rain: That’s holy water.” Those responsible for Mas will hope that Messi will lead the club up in sporting terms: Miami is currently in last place in the Eastern Conference of the MLS.
