Inter, Barella the tactical problem with Turin. And system count in the range

The match against Torino was a two-sided match for Inter. In the first part the team of Conte, in addition to being not very aggressive and with little competitive fury, it was also disorganized and poorly positioned. The Inter coach chose 3-4-1-2 to face Turin and placed, for the first time, Vidal in a more advanced position. There was, however, a problem of balance in the middle of the field and not the fault of the Chilean.

In the first part of the race, the one with Vidal at the top, Barella and Gagliardini (especially the first one) played too wide as if the Chilean was acting from the bottom (while instead he was in a more advanced position), leaving a gap in the middle of the field which probably favored the incursions of Turin.

In the second half, things changed. The two medians (Barella and Gagliardini) played tighter, preventing central raids. And this was also noticed when Conte decided to deploy Sanchez between the lines by removing Gagliardini and lowering Vidal alongside Barella. With the approach of the two central players, Inter has found balance, has suffered less and managed to become more dangerous and more aggressive. The most likely thing is that Conte at the end of the first half corrected this ‘wrong’ attitude of the midfielders, in particular of the former Cagliari.

And the confirmation came with the Lega Calcio report which highlighted this behavior of the midfielders. Here are the average positions of Inter players in the first and second half:

These, however, are the average positions in possession of Inter:

And lastly the average positions of Inter in the non-possession phase:
