Young theater or dance enthusiasts who dream of an artistic career have been selected for an intensive course in Sarcelles. The most talented will join a troupe that will play Cyrano de Bergerac at the Festival d’Avignon.
In training for ten days, 35 young talents wake up their bodies during the morning warm-up before separating into different workshops. In Sarcelles, Cyrano de Bergerac and his friends, the cadets of Gascony, fight or rap, but always respecting the text of Edmond Rostand. Sekou Dicko, 17, is one of the young talents: “The text is really complicated but when you rap it, it goes into your head and then it goes by itself, it’s great”.

Creating bridges between urban and classical culture is the ambition of Gaspard Baumhauer, at the origin of the project. In 2019, he presented, in Avignon, with professional actors, a very contemporary Cyrano.
Four years later, the Cyrano project starts again, but in Sarcelles, with the aim of training young talents from the neighborhoods in performing arts. “I see what we have done in a week, the evolution is magnificent and there is a huge pool here. There is raw talent, they send, they want it and as long as they want it we will go far far away” affirme Gaspard Baumhauer.
Some of these young people, recruited by simple casting, could play Festival d’Avignon in 2025. They will benefit, before, from many formations, and will play in public in Sarcelles. An unexpected chance for Nisrine Berkouki: “Every time I went to school to see a play and at the end the troupe greeted us and we had to ask questions, I was like ‘actually, that’s what I want to do, I want to live that”. I love this project because in addition to learning a lot of stuff, it makes me think about myself and what I really want to do”, enthuses the young 18-year-old recruit.

At the end of the week, only 12 trainees out of 35 will be selected to benefit from the two years of support and thus perhaps become professional actors.
