“Intensifying Attacks and Propaganda: The Situation in Kherson Region”

Yuriy Sobolevsky, the first deputy head of the Kherson District Council, reports that recently the intensity of attacks on the district has increased. On Tuesday, Russian troops fired 79 times at the Kherson region, firing more than 300 projectiles from various weapons.

Shots were also fired at the city itself, on Tuesday morning one of the most crowded places in Kherson was hit – the Central Market. One person was killed and 10 were injured in this attack.

“Currently, the shooting continues, including in Kherson. The last shooting ended literally 15 minutes ago. As a result of the shooting, two people sought medical help, one more person sought medical help, but he was injured yesterday,” said Sobolevsky at the press conference.

After yesterday’s attack on the central market of Kherson, the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office has initiated a new criminal trial for war crimes due to Russia’s deliberate targeting of a civilian gathering place.

There are already thousands of such criminal proceedings in Ukraine. Ukrainians are not going to forget anyone killed. However, only a very small part of these processes have moved forward, even if they have been judged remotely. An international war crimes trial is also expected.

Russian propaganda media reported on Tuesday that the owner of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, visited the part of the Kherson region occupied by Russian troops.

Ukrainian officials say that at least the information at their disposal does not indicate any increased security measures in the Russian-occupied part of the Kherson region. These would likely have been implemented if Putin had actually visited the Kherson region, on the left bank of the Dnieper River. Ukrainians believe that this is all part of Russia’s propaganda campaign, showing its people this “new Russia”.

The representative of the administration of Kherson region was able to tell that the residents of the occupied territory received news that the situation there was very difficult – the residents were forced to take Russian passports, otherwise access to medical services was limited, they were also offered to move to Russia, support was promised, but the response was not great .

It is currently very difficult for them to leave the occupied territories to return to Ukraine – the only way is through Crimea and Russia, they have to go through many checkpoints and even children are interrogated there.

Returning the children of Kherson region back to Ukraine is also very difficult. Kherson and Kharkiv regions are two of the most affected in this regard; it is from these areas that children are mostly stuck in Russia.

Russian troops occupied these areas for more than half a year, and the children there were offered various camps, recreation and entertainment events in Russia, but when they had to return home, it turned out that this was not allowed.

Thus, many thousands of children are still stuck in Russia. As could be understood from the representative of the administration of Kherson region, the local government is also working alongside the non-governmental organizations to try to get them back.
