British police are intensifying, for the second day in a row, the search for the British soldier, Daniel Abed Khalifa, who managed to escape from Wandsworth prison, south of the capital, London, on Wednesday morning.
As the escape took place in central London, more than 150 members of the Metropolitan Police were dedicated to investigation and research, in addition to putting all police forces on alert. For fear of leaving the country’s successor, security measures were strengthened at airports and ports.
Anger in the British street
And in the latest developments in the case that sparked outrage on the British street, what was shown by the new surveillance cameras footage of the food delivery truck that was said to have been carrying the suspect, Daniel Khalifa, from Wandsworth Prison, shortly after his daring escape.
The food delivery truck that Khalifa, 21, was strapping himself to, was seen making its way down a busy road in southwest London on Wednesday. The new footage does not appear to show any signs of the former soldier taking refuge, although a photo shared by the Metropolitan Police shows a small belt hanging near the back of a lorry.
“Yesterday morning, we became aware of a security incident involving one of our cars, during delivery. We can confirm that our driver cooperated fully with the police in this matter prior to returning to the depot. We will continue to assist the authorities in their ongoing investigation,” the company said in a statement.
The new footage comes hours after MailOnline shared video of police stopping the delivery van the suspect was said to have clung to during his daring escape from Wandsworth Prison.
The soldier sneaks past a food delivery truck
The soldier turned alleged spy, dressed as a chef, served breakfast to fellow prisoners and then evaded guards and security cameras as the car drove 250 yards along an inbound road and out through the famous Victorian gate at Wandsworth Prison in a matter of minutes. Khalifa is believed to have slipped through one of several doors into the kitchen after he said he was unloading a supply truck.
According to the information. Khalifa clung to the underside of the truck with straps that the police found after they stopped the car, but Khalifa was long gone. The truck was about two and a half miles from Wandsworth Prison when it stopped.
The officers, using sniffer dogs, spent two hours combing the car and looking under it.
Resourceful.. with high skills
Khalifa was described as “a very resourceful person”, and the Metropolitan Police’s head of counter-terrorism command, Commander Dominic Murphy, added: “Our experience with him shows that, so nothing is off the table with him at the moment. This was a really busy area of London and we didn’t have any Confirmed sightings in any of that information, which is rather unusual, and perhaps a testament to Daniel Khalifa’s ingenuity in his escape and some of his post-escape movements. It’s important to remember that we have some of the best military in the world here in the UK and they’ve been trained. He was a trained soldier, so in the end he has skills that the natives probably don’t have.”
Former army friends also described him as a lonely person obsessed with the video game “Call of Duty”. A former soldier who was friends with him when they were cadets in Dorset said: “He was the first person in his family to join the army. He was a bit of a loner, he was a big player – loved Call of Duty. He was very quiet and studied a lot and was first in class at forces, but he was also known for being a bit aggressive.
Accused of spying for Iran
Khalifa described his role on social media as a computer specialist with skills including information technology and system administration. Khalifa, a former soldier in the 22nd Signal Regiment who was being held on remand at Wandsworth Prison ahead of his six-week terror trial, was supposed to be working in the kitchens when he crept and strapped himself under a Bidfood truck that was transporting food and supplies on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the British government pledged to arrest the former soldier who escaped Wednesday morning from a prison in London, where he was awaiting trial on “terrorist” charges, while the media confirmed that he was also wanted on suspicion of spying for Iran.
The flight of Daniel Khalifa was an embarrassment for the British authorities, as he escaped unnoticed on a delivery truck.
Following his escape, the security forces staged a nationwide manhunt, while his escape raised shock and raised questions about the prison system.
Discovering his escape.. after 20 minutes
It is suspected that the young man collected intelligence that could be used by terrorists or enemies of the United Kingdom.
According to a number of media outlets, including the BBC, the authorities suspect that the former soldier worked for Iran.
“Daniel Khalife will be found and he will face justice,” Justice Minister Alex Schalke told lawmakers.
According to the course of events announced by the authorities, the prisoner was reported missing approximately 20 minutes after the vehicle left Wandsworth Prison in London on Wednesday at approximately 7:30 am local time (6:30 am GMT) after an order had been delivered to the kitchens.
