Intense Tropical Storm Shanshan, or Typhoon No. 10 in Japanese names, currently passing through waters south of Japan. It is expected to move north and approach the country’s main islands on Tuesday.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said, at 3 am on Saturday, that the storm had a mean atmospheric pressure of 985 hectopascals and maximum sustained winds of 108 kilometers per hour near the center, with minute gusts of up to 162 kilometers per hour.
Shanshan is expected to develop, reach waters near the Ogasawara Islands and then move northwest. It is likely to intensify by Tuesday and approach the eastern and western regions of Japan.
Authorities are warning that rain and wind could gradually become more intense, especially in the part of these areas facing the Pacific Ocean.
They say severe weather may also occur in northern Japan on Wednesday.
The Central Japan Railway Company may suspend service on all or some sections of the Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train line for a period including Tuesday and Wednesday.
The company may also cancel local train service in the city of Nagoya and surrounding areas.
For its part, the West Japan Railway Company announced that the Sanyo Shinkansen bullet train line may be completely or partially suspended between Tuesday and Wednesday.
Both companies ask users to check the latest information.
