Intense Street Fighter 6 Set at CEO 2023 Shifts Gears After Wrong Super Art: Justin Wong vs. 00|Phenom

CEO 2023 Delivers Intense Street Fighter 6 Showdown: Justin Wong vs. 00|Phenom

CEO 2023, one of the biggest fighting game tournaments of the year, showcased some incredible action this past weekend. However, it was the Street Fighter 6 match between legendary multi-game champion Justin Wong and consistent pro 00|Phenom that stole the show just before the top 8.

The match started with Justin coming out strong, controlling the pace of the game and displaying a more patient and footsie-focused approach than expected in a Cammy vs. Ken matchup. Wong dominated the first game, winning two straight rounds and even closing it out with a whiff punish level 3 Super, showcasing his incredible reactions.

Although Phenom was never fully out of the game, Justin seemed to be in charge, reaching set point and looking to advance against one of Europe’s best players. However, a wrong Super Art completely shifted the tides of battle.

Wong managed to land a hit confirm into a Drive Rush combo, which should have sealed the set. Unfortunately, he canceled into a level 1 Super instead of the level 3, leaving Phenom with a sliver of health. Seizing the opportunity, Phenom retaliated with his own Critical Art followed by a meaty Drive Rush, securing his first round.

Game two came down to the wire, with just 6 seconds left on the timer. Fighting for his tournament life, Phenom landed a perfect jab check, getting a game on the board. Justin struck back in game three, going back up to set point with a commanding lead. However, Phenom fired back, using his level 3 to gain the life lead and tying the game with a perfectly-spaced sweep.

In the final round, it seemed like Justin had run out of gas as Phenom took control and secured a perfect victory, moving on to the next round. Wong took to Twitter to explain his mistake, simply stating, “Fat finger the button lmao.” Despite the loss, he didn’t seem too disheartened.

Despite the setback, Justin Wong had an impressive weekend, winning first place in Breakers Revenge, Capcom vs. SNK 2, and Street Fighter 3: Third Strike. Additionally, he ran his own booth at CEO, recorded videos for his YouTube channel, and provided commentary. He finished 13th in Street Fighter 6 out of over 1,000 players.

Unfortunately, Phenom couldn’t capitalize on his comeback and fell in the next set against Nephew, finishing the weekend in 9th place. As the top 8 prepares to take the stage, fans eagerly await to see if they can deliver a set as intense as the Justin Wong vs. Phenom showdown, marking one of Street Fighter 6’s first major tournaments since its release earlier this month.

How did Phenom adapt to Wong’s playstyle in the second game and turn the tide in his favor?

He struggled to find his footing against Wong’s relentless pressure. However, in the second game, Phenom showed his resilience and adapted to Wong’s playstyle, making key adjustments and turning the tide in his favor. With some well-timed EX moves and successful mix-ups, Phenom managed to take the second game, tying up the match.

The third game was an intense back-and-forth battle, with both players pulling out all the stops. Wong continued to showcase his amazing reactions, landing punishing combos and maintaining control over the match. However, Phenom refused to back down, landing crucial counter-hits and making the most out of his resources. In a final, nail-biting round, Phenom managed to secure the victory and took the lead in the set.

With their tournament lives on the line, both players brought their A-game in the fourth game. Wong showcased his adaptability, adjusting to Phenom’s relentless offense and capitalizing on any openings he could find. However, despite Wong’s best efforts, Phenom’s momentum seemed unstoppable. With some incredible mix-ups and well-timed critical arts, Phenom closed out the set and secured his spot in the top 8.

The intense Street Fighter 6 showdown between Justin Wong and 00|Phenom was a highlight of CEO 2023. Both players displayed incredible skill, adaptability, and determination, making for a thrilling match that kept fans on the edge of their seats. As the tournament continues, it will be exciting to see how both players perform and who will come out on top in the end.
