Mexico City, Oct 17 (EFE).- The states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán and the south of Jalisco will register intense rains during the next few hours, after the formation of tropical storm Norma, this Tuesday afternoon in the Pacific Ocean The National Meteorological Service (SMN) of Mexico reported this Tuesday.
In a statement, the SMN indicated that intense occasional rains are expected (75 to 150 millimeters [mm]) in Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán and southern Jalisco; very strong (50 to 75 mm) in Oaxaca, as well as waves of 1 to 3 meters (m) high on the coasts of the aforementioned states, due to the extensive cloud bands of the tropical storm.
The institution specified that during the afternoon, Norma was located approximately 700 kilometers (km) southwest of Punta San Telmo, Michoacán, and 720 km south-southwest of Manzanillo, Colima.
In addition, it registers maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (km/h), gusts of 85 km/h and is moving towards the west-northwest at 17 km/h.
Additionally, very heavy occasional rains are expected in Chiapas; strong in Tabasco and Veracruz; intervals of showers in Campeche, Chihuahua, Nayarit, Puebla, Sinaloa and Sonora, in addition to isolated rains in Baja California, Baja California Sur, Durango, State of Mexico, Quintana Roo and Yucatán, “caused by low pressure channels over the north, center and southeast of the country, as well as in the Yucatán Peninsula, in interaction with the entry of humidity from both oceans.”
The SMN pointed out that the heavier rains will be with electric shocks and could generate landslides, an increase in the levels of rivers and streams, overflows and flooding in areas of the aforementioned states, which is why it urges the population to heed the warnings.
He also said that monitoring continues over a low pressure area in the Pacific with a 20% probability of cyclonic development in the 48-hour forecast. This afternoon it was located approximately 700 km east-southeast of the mouth of the Suchiate River, Mexico-Guatemala border.
Norma was noted as the fourteenth named cyclone of this season in the Pacific, where 13 systems have already formed: Adrian, Beatriz, Calvin, Dora, Eugene, Fernanda, Greg, Hilary, Irwin, Jova, Kenneth, Lidia and Max .
Of them, the most damaging has been Hilary, which in August left four dead in the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur and Sinaloa, all in northern Mexico.
While the double scourge of cyclones Lidia and Max, a week ago, left five dead: one in Nayarit, two in Jalisco and two in Guerrero.
The Government of Mexico predicted in May the formation of up to 38 named cyclones in the 2023 season, of which five could hit the country.
Of that number, between 16 and 22 systems could occur in the Pacific Ocean, and between 10 and 16 in the Atlantic.
