Intense Moments in the ICU: Geraldine Kemper Witnesses Newborn Baby Taken off Ventilator

In the latest episode of ‘Five Days Inside’, Geraldine Kemper (33) visits the intensive care unit of the Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital in Utrecht, a department where serious events regularly occur. Geraldine experiences this firsthand when newborn baby Nick is taken off the ventilator.

“I thought this was really very intense”

Geraldine is immediately confronted with the facts upon arrival. Team leader Leonie Hogendoorn says that a baby died last night. Life and death are literally next to each other in intensive care. “I actually didn’t realize that properly at all,” the presenter admits.

Geraldine, like a real nurse, has little time to process the intense story. A new patient needs to be helped. It concerns Nick, a child of less than three months old.

A little later she meets Nick’s parents, Anja and Han. “Nick was born with a heart defect,” Anja tells Geraldine. After birth, the baby must undergo open heart surgery.

The doctors prepare to take Nick off the ventilator. The male is slowly taken off oxygen. “You can wake up nice,” nurse Lara says to the baby. Nick slowly wakes up, but it soon becomes apparent that something is going wrong. The monitor next to the bed starts to beep heavily. “Can you call Nickie?” Lara calmly asks her colleague. Nickie and Lara then put the little man back on a ventilator together.

Lara manually administers the oxygen. However, the monitors’ alarms are still going off. “Casper needs to be called,” Lara says firmly to a colleague. The atmosphere next to the bed is tense. Geraldine and Nick’s parents watch with a feeling of powerlessness as four men try to save the boy’s life.

While the team is busy with Nick, nurse Nickie updates the concerned parents and Geraldine. “It was not possible to keep the air pressure free all by myself,” she explains calmly. The nurse doesn’t know exactly what is going on with the little man. “Nick is breathing on his own?” Father Han asks worriedly. Lara nods in agreement: “We’re just helping him a little.”

When peace has returned to the bed, nurse Nickie tries to break the depressed atmosphere. “It was annoying to see, wasn’t it?” he asks Nick’s parents. “You’d rather not see it. It’s your child after all,” they answer.

Defeated, Geraldine walks out into the hallway, where she vents to the camera. “I found this really very intense,” she says emotionally. “The energy is changing. People are being called in.” Geraldine is visibly having a hard time. “I can’t imagine what this was like for the parents.”
