The chance of the draw for the Coupe de France offers Lyon an opponent of choice for this 1/16th final with the reception of the Brûleurs de Loups de Grenoble. Beyond the prestige of the poster, the context is particularly unfavorable for the Lyonnais. Indeed, they failed to capitalize on their victory against Mont-Blanc during their first official outing of the season in the 1/32nd final by losing in their three championship matches. Last in their group, Damien Raux’s men are looking for confidence before returning to the championship on Saturday at Charlemagne for a championship match against Clermont-Ferrand which could already prove crucial for the rest of the season.
On the Grenoble side, after a sluggish start to the season (3 wins and 4 losses), the Isérois have found their cruising speed and remain on a series of 5 victories in a row in the Magnus League, thereby returning to the podium (3rd with 23 points).
Finally, for the anecdote the X account (ex-twitter) @statsBDL noted that Lyon and Grenoble faced each other at this stage of the competition on October 24, 2019 (5 years to the day), and Lyon – then in the Magnus League – came to win 2 to 1 on the ice of Pôle Sud . In the meantime, other morals…
The Lyonnais try to stand out from the start of the match. Månsson moves back towards the cage but Garnier – started this evening – does not let himself be fooled. The Grenoblois settle into the offensive zone and take advantage of a change of line from the Lions to project themselves forward. Treille and Koudri cross the ice with a touch of a puck. Number 18 of Brûleurs de Loups shifts Fleury who can adjust Clément Ginier’s top corner for the opening score (0-1, 3’52”). The Lyon goalkeeper must then use the shield to deflect Rouhiainen’s long-range attempt. Lyon suffers from Grenoble’s pressure and incursions into the attacking zone are rare, but Kulha takes advantage of a favorable counterattack to go on the counterattack. His slap shot collides with Garnier’s blocker. The reaction of the visitors was not long in coming with an almost identical sequence at the 1st goal: Søberg, Farnier and Bachelet combined for a classic tic-tac-toe (0-2, 5’37”). Once again, it went too quickly for the Lyon defense. The Isérois are not satisfied with the score and continue to press. They keep the puck in their offensive zone and multiply the hot actions in front of Clément Ginier’s goal. Following one of them, Lamothe and Treille clutch the collar of their jerseys and exchange sweet words. The shots keep coming but the Lions goalkeeper delays the deadline while outnumbered. Having to buzz around the Lyon goal, the 3rd goal ended up falling halfway through Flavian Dair’s stick (0-3, 9’42”). The Brûleurs de Loups did not relax their grip, the Lyonnais chained long sequences in their defensive zone and it was very difficult for them to make line changes. Incursions into offensive territory are rare, but Franzino and Kulha combine and place Chavant in a good position. The former Spartan’s backhand shot nevertheless did not deceive Garnier, who had not been very busy until then. The last minutes of the third did not change anything in the score despite the repeated attacks from Grenoble players.
The Brûleurs de Loups were quick to widen the gap at the very start of the middle period. Barely 93 seconds after the throw-in, Søberg overwhelms the Lyon defense and crosses back for Bachelet who rattles the metal from the top corner for the double (0-4, 21’33”). In the following minute, Mouret was penalized for holding. The Lions suffer but manage to kill the penalty with another high-class save from Clément Ginier on Aubin. Far from their bench and cornered in their defensive zone, the Lions often spend long periods on the ice without being able to make a change. Sure of their fact, the Grenoblois rotate the puck into opposing territory and look for the “beautiful” goal but Clément Ginier is solid against Bachelet then Fleury. The Lyonnais are finally able to get their heads above water and are showing themselves to be enterprising. Chavant takes a backhand shot and comes up against Garnier. The usual back-up from Stepanek then takes out the boot on an attempt from Estienne well served by Baravaglio. Halfway through the match, Grenoble accelerated again, and kept the puck in the offensive zone. Bachelet heats Clément Ginier’s mitt then it’s Fleury who alerts from close range. In the 34th minute, Onno admires his skating and opens a line of shot at the top of the slot which Daneau deflects victoriously (0-5, 33’10”). The locals will rely on their goalkeeper so that the score does not worsen further: Clément Ginier frustrates Fleury, then Deschamps (making his save lying on his back!) and finally Farnier alone in the breakaway.
Grenoble continues to play the game at the start of the 3rd third. Lavoie then a descent orchestrated by Munoz and Rondeau passes close to the goal. However, the Isérois are less sharp and the Gones try to take advantage of it, in particular through Chquant, the best Lyonnais in the field this evening. The latter against a puck in the neutral zone and allows Kulha to face Garnier alone. The Slovak chooses to send a slapshot which passes over the goalkeeper’s glove (1-5, 47’29”). Reboosted by this goal and by the saves of Clément Ginier – winning against Flavian Dair who had gone behind the defense – the Lions became emboldened and provoked two penalties in quick succession (Munoz for projection against the boards then Onno for blow elbow). Damien Raux calls for his time-out to prepare for the upcoming 5-on-3 power play. The puck circulates well and Månsson reduces the score with a precise wrist shot into the top corner (2-5, 51’57”). Charlemagne’s side, still well-stocked this evening (2,133 spectators), are vocal and pushing their charges, but the last actions of the match will be the work of the Brûleurs de Loups. However, no 6th goal for the Magnus residents, the fault of Clément Ginier who multiplies the saves until the last seconds.
Outrageously dominant, the Brûleurs de Loups delivered a solid performance for 35 minutes, leaving nothing or almost nothing to the Lions. At 5 to 0, the intensity has dropped a notch, which is not abnormal given the upcoming deadlines for the Isérois (trip to Gap on Friday and reception of Angers on Sunday). The Lyonnais suffered, physically and through the speed of play, but had to remain disciplined (only 2 penalties conceded) and win the last third.
