In terms of level of competition, only sports pairs can compare with representatives of men’s single skating. Perhaps this species is even ahead of all others in terms of the intensity of the struggle. Such diverse and technical duets came to the Russian Championship in Chelyabinsk.
U Alena Kostornaya and Georgy Kunitsa the short program did not go well. After the Grand Prix stages, the athletes changed the music and choreographic routines, which surprised the Chelyabinsk audience. It is interesting that several years ago Alena herself skated to the new composition – the legendary “Angel” was definitely included in the list of her best productions. The new costumes are also a little reminiscent of Kostornaya’s singles dress. Unfortunately, changing the music did not help the couple. It is clear that work is underway on the triple twist – the element has become higher, the partner attempted a split. Everything was ruined by an offensive fall on a triple ejection. 63.74 points is Alena and Georgiy’s worst performance so far this season.
They are now in the lead in the fight for bronze Ekaterina Chikmareva and Matvey Yanchenkov. The Perm duo performed to the composition Fly by Italian Ludovico Einaudi. This music suits them very well – the skaters perform all the elements with ease, literally flying on the ice. Their parallel rotation let them down a little: in one position they didn’t have enough speed to reach the maximum difficulty level. Nevertheless, a great performance from recent juniors – 76.42 points, a new personal record for Chikmareva and Yanchenkov.
Alexandra Boykova and Dmitry Kozlovsky stopped at second position. On the starting triple loop, the partner was led away due to under-rotation, and she flew out into the step-out. Apparently, the couple was too eager to show off everything they had done with the headquarters Eteri Tutberidze work. The mistake on the jump did not affect the presentation; throughout the skating, Boykova and Kozlovsky tried to complete all the movements to the maximum. They received 78.95 points for their performance – it will be difficult to win back in the free program.
Their main rivals Anastasia Mishina and Alexander Gallyamov are confidently leading with a 4-point lead after the first day. In terms of emotions, they were slightly inferior to Alexandra and Dmitry: Mishina performed all the elements automatically and even a little detached from her partner. It is clear that Nastya and Sasha approached the Russian Championships in ideal shape – they completed the short program cleanly and confidently. The only shortcoming we can name is the step track, where the skaters noticeably lost speed. Today it is 83.01 points – they are unlikely to give up the victory in the free program.
If almost everything has been decided with the title of Russian champions in pair skating, then a real showdown awaits for bronze. The advantage of Chikmareva and Yanchenkov over other duets is not so great. Less than a point behind Julia Artemyeva / Alexey Bryukhanov with a quadruple twist in the arsenal and Elizaveta Osokina / Artem Gritsaenko, progressing from start to start. Yes and Natalya Khabibullina / Ilya Knyazuk with an expensive triple lutz cascade they lose to Perm by only three points. In general, it will be wildly interesting.
