(CNN) Heavy fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces erupts near the Antonisky Bridge in Kherson Oblast, southern Ukraine.
Russian-appointed officials denied reports that Ukraine had seized strategically important territory in Russian-controlled territory east of the Dnipro.
But a Russian military blogger said on Monday that Russian forces had failed to remove Ukrainian soldiers from the east bank. “There are casualties on our side,” he said. “The enemy continues to hold a small beachhead on our east bank.
Two bloggers said Ukrainian fighters were hiding under a bridge and Russian forces were firing missiles and rockets at them.
The Russian-appointed governor of Kherson province, Sardo, said missile strikes on Ukrainian soldiers crossing the Dnipro river resulted in dozens of casualties.
At least 30 militants were killed and more than a dozen seriously injured, Sardo said on social media telegram on Wednesday when an Iskander missile landed near the Antonisky Bridge.
CNN could not confirm the governor’s claims about Ukrainian casualties, but a video taken south of the bridge shows new damage to the bridge and the destruction of the entire flyover. The position information of the video has been confirmed.
Heavy fighting has continued in the area for nearly a week as Ukrainian forces establish a beachhead on the east bank of the Dnipro.
