Intel’s 14th Generation Raptor Lake Refresh: New Socket and Compatibility Details

Intel recently launched 14th generation Core processors in the Raptor Lake Refresh family. They still use the LGA-1700 socket that launched with the 12th generation (Alder Lake) in 2021, and a new socket called LGA-1851 is expected instead with next year’s Arrow Lake.

New socket means that those who want to upgrade need a new motherboard. With LGA-1851, Intel will abandon support for DDR4 memory, so those who do not already have DDR5 memory will also need to upgrade their memory. But one component that probably doesn’t need to be upgraded is the processor cooler, reports say Techspot.

Namely, LGA-1851 has support for the same processor cooler as LGA-1700. Techspot has looked at manuals and other documentation for coolers from, among others, Azza and Noctua, which confirm that they will also work with the upcoming new socket. Noctua has already added LGA-1851 support to the product descriptions on Amazon for several of its coolers.

Most coolers that work with LGA-1700 also list support for the previous generations, LGA-1200 and LGA-1151, so while that’s welcome news, it’s hardly surprising that the same cooler will continue to work this time around as well.
