Intelligence of Ungulates: Surprising Findings from Recent Study in Meteor

Are animal outsiders the smartest?

In a newly published study, scientists looked at the intelligence of ungulates. It was especially difficult for the animals because their job was to open the box, and that goes very badly with hooves. At the same time, the researchers observed who was the leader and who was the outsider in the group. They assumed that it would be the leaders who would open the box the fastest and be the most successful. The opposite was true. How is this possible, biologist prof. explained in Meteor. Jaroslav Petr.

Spontaneous fission of elements

In 1939, Conrad Röntgen published his discovery of fission of uranium nuclei using neutrons. After only a few weeks, the first papers were published showing that during fission, in addition to the debris of the uranium core, more neutrons are produced than are consumed by the fission itself. Soviet physicists Georgij Fljorov and Konstantin Petržak decided to thoroughly measure fission. They thought of measuring the uranium before the controlled fission began. They already thought the background was zero as expected when there was a crackling sound. After him another… What? That uranium would fission spontaneously, by itself, so to speak? We reminded you of this in the column It happened this day, which is prepared by Ing. Francis Houdek.

Were dinosaurs warm-blooded?

Experts have been dealing with this question for a very long time. Imagine a giant brontosaurus. Would it be enough for him to bask in the sun? With the enormous volume of his body, he wouldn’t need to cool down at all overnight. If the dinosaurs were warm-blooded, it can be shown by analyzing the bones. Today, the prevailing opinion is that most species were warm-blooded, as the dinosaur expert Dr. Vladimir Socha.

Is it possible to drown a fish?

It may sound unlikely, but the answer is yes. Of course, the positive answer does not apply to any fish. In our case, these are species that belong to the group of labyrinthine fish. In addition to gills, they are also equipped with a special respiratory organ – the labyrinth. It was formed above the first gill arch and is made up of a system of heavily perfused skin growths that take oxygen from the air and transfer it to the blood. They are a kind of auxiliary lungs that complement the insufficient performance of the gills. Miloň Čepelka reads the experiences of zoologist Karel Pecel.

Why do observatories have domes?

We wouldn’t recognize the first observatories, they were just buildings with tall windows. There was still a long way to go to the dome. Observatories initially did not have domes simply because there was no reason for them. Moreover, the production of the dome is quite complex as it has to be precise in order to be able to rotate the dome. But the progress of observation technology changed the attitude of the builders and the era of observatories with domes came. The details were described by Ing. Štěpán Kovář from the Czech Astronomical Society.

Life fate of the doctor Paracelsus

His name was Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, but he entered history under the name Paracelsus. In the field of medicine, it is a concept. He reformed medicine to make it, one might say, more scientific. At the beginning of the 16th century, this was a great advance. At the same time, he was a very complex personality with whom almost no one could stand. He openly challenged the authorities of his time, which had a bad effect on his career. This personality impressed Josef Kleibl, the founder and long-time editor of Meteor, so much that in 1989 he commissioned a six-part dramatization of the life of Paracelsus. The doctor lies on his deathbed, remembering his life and his conscience gnaws at his head…
