Intel will invest 17 billion euros in Germany

The American microchip manufacturer Intel will invest 17 billion euros in the construction of two chip factories in Magdeburg, East Germany, DPA and Reuters reported. The construction of the enterprises should start in the spring of 2023 at the latest.

German media have long reported that Intel is looking at locations in Germany for its new plants, but today the news was announced by the company’s boss Pat Gelsinger.

Germany welcomes large-scale investment planned by Intel, which will create 3,000 high-tech jobs and many more in the supply chain“said Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

According to Reuters, Intel plans a total investment of 88 billion euros in Europe. In addition to the plants in Germany, they plan to modernize the existing factory in Ireland worth 12 billion euros, create a research center in France with about 1,000 jobs and a packaging and assembly plant in Italy worth 4.5 billion euros, which should work between 2025 and 2027

This should ensure the supply of chips for computer, smartphone and car manufacturers in Europe, as well as reduce dependence on Asian supplies.

The Magdeburg plants will employ 7,000 construction workers, 3,000 staff and several tens of thousands of ancillary jobs for partners and suppliers.

The scattering of investment in several countries will allow Intel to receive state aid, but will have to negotiate it with each country individually, says EU Commissioner for Industry Thierry Breton.
