During its presentation at Computex 2021, Intel confirmed that the company is now putting a lot of focus on taking 5G to laptops. This with its first 5G product ever developed in collaboration with MediaTek.
Intel has for a long time been invested in developing 5G solutions for processors. However, the company sold its resources for mobile connections to Apple in the middle of 2019. However, since the end of 2019, the company has had a collaboration with MediaTek in an attempt to finally make this a reality. Now the collaboration has given its first result in the form of Intel 5G Solution 5000 which was unveiled during Computex 2021.
This new device is not just a MediaTek product that Intel put its sticker on. This is a semi-specially designed device just for Intel. 5G Solution 5000 is a kind of plug-in card that is connected via the M.2 standard over PCI Express 3.0. The physical aspects of the device are also somewhat odd. Instead of having similar dimensions to existing M.2 products such as SSDs, Intel and MediaTek have given units dimensions of 30 x 54 x 2.2 millimeters.
In terms of the 5G standard as support, it is the slightly slower sub-6 GHz variant that applies. However, the spread of technology in general has been relatively tenacious and the actual need for the standard in laptops can be discussed. However, we see more and more players attaching importance to this. Exactly what results it will get in the end, however, remains to be seen.
When it comes to actual computer models equipped with Intel 5G Solution 5000, it is not directly about any armada on input. Initially, only three of Intel’s partner manufacturers will offer a total of six different computer models equipped with the 5G card. However, Intel during its presentation promises that this figure will jump to over 30 next year.
