Intel suspends construction of a factory in Poland

As Deputy Prime Minister Gawkowski said, the reason is the company’s “global financial problems”.

Intel’s decision was announced by the company’s CEO Pat Gelsinger in a conversation with Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski. The US giant is suspending all of its investment plans related to the construction of previously planned semiconductor factories in Germany and Poland until 2026.

“For the past few months, we have been working on preparing strategic semiconductor investments. Last week, we received the green light from the European Commission to submit an application for state aid for Intel. This experience allows us to efficiently implement similar projects and we will work on this in the future,” the Deputy Prime Minister also said.

In June 2023, Intel announced an investment of approximately $4.6 billion to launch a semiconductor integration and testing facility in Miękinia near Wrocław. The company announced that the new enterprise would employ about 2,000 people. It was emphasized that Intel’s decision would also mean thousands of positions with suppliers and temporary employment during construction work.

Intel announced at the time that the new factory near Wrocław, combined with the existing silicon wafer production plant in Ireland and the second planned silicon wafer production plant in Magdeburg (Germany), will help create the first comprehensive and most technologically advanced supply chain in Europe in the field of semiconductor integrated circuit production.
