Intel releases Loihi 2 chip with one million programmable neurons

Intel has now released its new Loihi 2 chip, which is intended to mimic the human brain and is specifically designed for research experiments, reports The Register.

The chip consists of 128 nuclei, all of which have 8192 components, which means that there are over one million neurons that can run each program. Everything is then controlled by six standard cpu cores. Several Loihi 2 chips can be connected to a mesh and can also communicate with other hardware.

According to Intel, the Loihi 2 is ten times faster than its predecessor, which was introduced four years ago. That chip was used, among other things, to create systems that could identify odors, handle robot arms and optimize train schedules. Intel is now collaborating with several researchers to find uses for Loihi 2.
