Built-in RAM is one of the factors that did Apple M processors effective. Intel tried to do this in Lunar Lake, but it doesn’t happen anymore – it’s expensive.
As is known, Intel Core Ultra 200V laptop processors (Lunar Lake) RAM on the substrate. According to Intel, this design led to a good, but serious result profit hit. The chip maker says it won’t use onboard memory in future processors.
«[Встроенная память] it is unique to Lunar Lake. This will not happen in Panther Lake, Nova Lake and its successors. We will build them in a more traditional way…
Intel Core Ultra 200V processors received built-in LPDDR5X-8533 memory with a capacity of 16 GB or 32 GB, connected via a 128-bit interface. This saves a lot of space inside the laptop, as memory modules or soldered chips take up more. Data transfer delays are reduced, and the extra space can be used for a larger battery or for other purposes.
Such built-in LPDDR5X memory costs more than standard memory, and installation is also more expensive. this will affect the cost of Lunar Lake. Also, processors with pre-installed memory reduce the flexibility of laptop and PC designs.
“Lunar Lake was first developed as a special product where we wanted to achieve maximum performance and long battery life, and then the AI PC came along. And with the AI computer, it has gone from being a niche product to a very normal product. Relatively speaking, we are not talking about 50 million or 100 million units, but about a significant part of our total range, and not a relatively small part. This change happened and had a bigger impact on Lunar Lake’s margins and the company as a whole,” explained Gelsinger.
Intel says it envisioned Lunar Lake as a unique product for compact laptops with long battery life. However, due to the need for NPU chips, Intel had to increase the output capacity of these processors. Therefore, although the processors have been successful, Intel no longer wants to deal with embedded DRAM in the future.
