Intel finally took advantage of CES 2020, in Las Vegas, to officially reconnect with the world of graphics cards. Its newly unveiled DG1 reveals a compact design on the outside and Xe architecture on the inside.
It is unlikely that this card will be accessible to the general public. Rather, it should be used to optimize new Intel products.
No more than 75 watts for the Intel GPU
Regarding performance, Intel remains silent. The card does not have a power connector: this will be done via the PCIe 16x connector, which implies a power below 75 watts. Without more information from Intel, this reduced power may greatly reduce the performance of its DG1. During CES 2020, Intel nevertheless carried out demonstration sessions, in particular on Destiny 2. Inside, DG1 uses an architecture called Xe, which Intel wants to use in three formulas: “Xe LP”, “Xe HP” and “Xe HPC”. Already mentioned by the manufacturer last November, these graphics cards must each correspond to a performance level. In its most modest version, the 10th LP, The Verge thus expects a 20 watt iGPU.
Whichever version is adopted, the Xe architecture will also include dynamic adjustment. This should allow the graphics card to run faster to relieve the processor when it is overloaded. It is also GPU / CPU cooperation that we already observed at CES 2020, on the AMD Ryzen.

If it is a fully functional card (demonstration of Destiny 2 support) that Intel presented at CES 2020, however, it should not be intended for the general public. Intel having been absent in the field of graphics cards for years, this GPU should essentially be used by developers from all walks of life, who will be able to use it to optimize their software for new Intel products.
It remains to be seen the place that the manufacturer will be able to achieve in the face of the two current heavyweights in the sector: NVIDIA and AMD. The manufacturer’s return to this segment could upset a market that has long remained binary.
