Intel announced Thursday that its 7-nanometer processor technology is six months behind its initial estimates, Reuters reported.
The leading company in computer and data center processors stays on 7 nanometer technology, even though it still announced in 2017 that it would make the generational change.
As explained by George Davis, CFO of IntelHe explained that the company found a “critical defect” in part of the 7-nanometer manufacturing process that it was going to establish, so it will need to make adjustments.
Intel ensures that its methodology and architecture allow it to provide high-performance products with little correlation to the manufacturing process.
The outlook looks complicated for Intel considering that its competitors have gained quite a bit of ground.
To understand the implications, we have to understand that the sophistication of a chip is usually correlated to the nanometers of its components. While smaller, they are able to provide more efficiency and power.
AMD It implemented the 7 nanometer technology in the second half of 2018 and is expected to launch processors with 5 nanometer technology under the ZEN 4 architecture next year.
Also, Apple recently announced that it will design its own computer processors under the Apple Silicon brand, breaking a 15-year business relationship.
