The Phoronix website published a review of the Core Ultra 7 155H / Meteor Lake in Linux. It wasn’t easy, because he first had to find a version under which the basic functions ran so that testing could be done at all. The author struggled with everything from graphics problems to broken Wi-Fi and LAN:
I will write more about support/compatibility with Linux on the Acer Swift Go 14 laptop in a separate article, but in short it is not without problems. In addition to the graphics Meteor Lake was not stable until Linux 6.6, wired or wireless network did not work in Ubuntu 23.10. But let’s save that for a separate article, now we’ll focus only on the performance of Intel Core Ultra 7 155H against AMD Ryzen 7 7840U. We tested both AMD and Intel notebooks in Ubuntu 23.10 when updated to Linux kernel 6.7-rc5 and the latest linux-firmware.git. With Linux 6.7 essential features of Acer laptop and Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor (Meteor Lake) were running. Both laptops were tested on Linux at their respective default settings.
— Phoronix
In the end, he performed 370 tests on both the Core Ultra 7 155H setup and the Ryzen 7 7840U system. Leaving aside that previous reviews found that in terms of real-world consumption, the Core Ultra 7 155H should be compared to the more powerful Ryzen 7 7840HS rather than the 7840U, and let’s get straight to the bottom line:
Intel Core Ultra 7 155H vs. AMD Ryzen 7 7840U (Phoronix) Comparison
In the summary of all 370 tests, the Ryzen 7 7840U (Phoenix) 28% more powerful than the Core Ultra 7 155H (Meteor Lake), which when taking into account the prices of laptops with Meteor Lake and consumption measured in reviews so far, a result that is not much to praise. Looking at this graph and other results from a layman’s eyes, it looks as if the Ryzen 7 7840U is a new generation product, which the review compares to the competing Core Ultra 7 155H from the previous generation. Ryzen brings higher performance, lower consumption and a better price/performance ratio. The problem is that the situation is the other way around and the new thing is Core Ultra.
If you are considering a combination of Core Ultra and Linux for some reason, you definitely do not need to rush the purchase, because you will not lose anything by delaying (except for initial problems and performance at the level of the previous generation of processors). See the link in the resources for the complete results of the review.
