Intel Ceases Investment in Mini PC Business: Implications for NUC and Future Market

Jakarta

After a decade, Intel has finally given up working on mini PCs through its Next Unit of Compute (NUC) division and has stopped investing in the business.

Even so, Intel admits that it is maintaining its commitment by continuing to provide support for current NUC consumers, as quoted by detiKINET from Engadget, Wednesday (12/7/2023).

But that doesn’t mean NUC will completely disappear from the market, because Intel will think of a new approach so that their partners continue to make NUC.

Intel did not explain why they stopped the NUC business. But maybe this has something to do with their financial condition and the global PC market which continues to decline. Intel’s revenue for the past two quarters has fallen by more than a third, and the Client Computing Group is their division most affected.

For information, Intel first released the NUC in 2013 as a barebones mini PC device, aka consumers need to buy components such as RAM and storage themselves so that the device can be used.

The main purpose of NUC is to show off their latest processor, which is displayed in a mini casing. But in the future the NUC will turn into a PC that is more complete, more varied — for example, it can be equipped with a discrete GPU –.

But the competition in this business is quite tight, plus the market is not too big. One of the big players in this sector is Apple through the Mac Mini, which might be called the best mini PC — except for gaming — for now.

Then companies like Dell and Lenovo are also playing in this sector, with products that are more flexible in terms of system configuration, or stronger support for corporate users.
