Intel / Apple: Divorce of an unnatural couple

Love stories usually end in blood sausage. What is true in life is often also true for businesses. After a long journey together, Apple has therefore decided to abandon Intel to continue its journey alone.

The history of the Mac is made up of transitions. Fifteen years after announcing its intention to take the leap to Intel, now Apple has decided to (re) take its destiny in hand by equipping, from the end of the year, a first salvo of computers with its own chips.

Stupor and tremors. On June 6, 2005, during the inaugural WWDC keynote, the impossible happened. Steve Jobs announces a new transition for Macs, and not just any: a transition to Intel processors! In January of the following year, the marriage was consummated: Paul Otellini, the boss of Intel, arrived on the scene of the MacWorld keynote in his white jumpsuit, offering Steve Jobs a wafer. The announcement was a bombshell among fans coaxed by years of caustic ads mocking the Pentiums.

But criticism of Apple’s jacket reversal only lasts a long time: users quickly realize that the transition to Intel chips is beneficial to the Mac, which gains power and scalability. And yet, small frictions appear between the two lovebirds.
