Talk about muralism, urban art, graffiti, among other expressions along the same lines, for almost the entire 20th century it was considered vandalismo or street crime, rareason for which thousands of young people were persecuted in various parts of the world.
By the end of that century and in so far in the 21st century, these expressions have been associated with the promotion of local cultures and the diversification of domestic tourism.
An example of model cities in which this type of expression is visible is the East Side Gallery in Berlin; Melbourne, Australia; Los Angeles United States.
So are Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Barcelona, Spain; The Savior; Prague, Czech Republic; Seattle, United States.
And of course, the city that never sleeps, New York.
In the Dominican Republic, attempts have been made by various municipalities to promote this art, being the most successful and referent the one executed by the Mayor’s Office of Santiago de los Caballeros, in the North of the country, in its last 6 years.

These basically focus on recognizing the trajectory of great personalities of the country in various areas, but they do not lose the concept of continuing to be an art urban or muralism in modern times. Hundreds of people stop to visit them, take photos, videos, drawings, thus generating a circular and tourist economic movement. Including the recovery of forgotten spaces.
In the case of Greater Santo Domingo, except for the National District that has had attempts in the areas of the Malecón, Colonial and others, the rest have lagged behind in promoting this type of spaces that with short-term planning have guaranteed success.
Even the National District, despite the existing ones, does not reflect a defined and planned policy in that line, but for what is not done in East Santo Domingo; West and North, means a lot.
It becomes more and more necessary that the municipalities of Greater Santo Domingo look towards this type of wall modellism and urban art, and letr back the mentality that citizens are only interested in garbage collection, deficient without exception.
Today’s citizen, in an open world thanks to the use of technology, dreams of seeing municipal actions that are inclusive, attractive and that allow successful ideas to be undertaken around planned and well-defined municipal public policies.
We must bet that in a short time, with low budgets, in alliances with the business sectors, Changing landfills improvised by eye-catching spaces and integrating communities, our municipalities will be able to change for the better.
For this, we must be demanding with local authorities and those who seek to reach elective positions in the future, the cities must change as in which its citizens do so in the opening of knowledge and technological access.
Let’s bet on muralism, urban art, local cultural manifestations are expansive tools to reach friendly cities in every sense.
