Integrating young people’s concerns into public policy development

Libreville, Tuesday October 8, 2024 (Infos Gabon) – The topic was at the heart of the discussions on Monday during the World Habitat Day celebrated in Libreville and other cities in the country.

Gabon, like the international community, celebrated World Habitat Day on October 7 under the theme “Engaging youth for a better urban future” with the aim of showing the importance of young people in urban development.

With an estimated 70% of the world’s population, this segment of the population is the largest in cities, so their concerns must be integrated into the development and implementation of public policies.

In Gabon this day was celebrated under the national theme “training, innovations and participation of young people in improving the living environment” with the aim of involving young people in the organizational process by encouraging them to present their initiatives and concerns in urban planning and development. .

“This day aims to raise awareness of the issues related to access to adequate housing, urban planning and sustainable development,” said the Ministry of Housing led by Ludovic Menié. This day is celebrated in a context where the Gabonese authorities emphasize the construction of social housing to meet the needs of urban and rural populations.

In addition, World Habitat Day was also an opportunity to promote the merits and efforts of young people. To this end, for his contribution to sustainable development, the title of Green and Blue Leaders was awarded to Paul Alogui Lavoula, by Christine Mba, founder of the Léon Mba Institute.

Remember that youth represent 65% of the Gabonese population, with a basic education level estimated at over 90% according to the World Bank. The main problems these young people have are related to leaving school and getting into the job market.
