FRÍAS, Choya (C) The National Institute of Agricultural Technology (Inta) issued a series of guidelines through its official communication sites on social networks to protect summer gardens and keep food fresh.
In the Choya and Guasayán departments, orchards are a resource widely used by families, which during the pandemic has become much more powerful, reaching more than two thousand orchards in the area.
With the arrival of the heat, the activities in the garden intensify: planning, association of crops, soil fertilization and irrigation among the recommendations of Inta technicians for this time of year.
He maintains: “On warm days, activities in the garden are intensified and, in this context, technicians from ProHuerta –Inta program and the Nation’s Ministry of Social Development– provide a series of recommendations to produce and incorporate new species.”
Claudia Viana, a reference for the ProHuerta program at the national level, maintains that the first thing to consider is what you want to grow and in what quantity. “There are many species that can be planted: lettuce, chard, aubergine, tomato, pepper, pumpkin, squash, basil, parsley; that is why it is important to do good planning and take into account what we consume most of this variety of vegetables to efficiently use the available space.
Crop associations are another highlight. “One leaf and one root, for example: beet with chard, carrot with lettuce, tomato with basil,” the specialist mentioned. This is possible because the nutritional requirements are different and there is no competition between them.
The seedling should also be taken into account, which is a healthy plant with good root and stem development to ensure that it is strong, “that is why planting in trays is a good option since it allows for optimal soil, water and temperature conditions in the first stages of the plant, this will serve to ensure a good quality of the seeds”.
Finally, he specifies that it is essential “to pay attention to the water needs of the species, it must collect rainwater or generate a drip irrigation system.”
